Brazil is a country that has undergone huge changes over the past 15 years. The economic growth seen in the country has led to an unprecedented rise in the middle class, with millions obtaining steady jobs for the first time. Unfortunately due to an estimated 8 million shortage in suitable housing, many of these people still live in Brazil’s notorious favelas.
To address this deficit, the government has launched the Minha Casa, Minha Vida (My House, My Life) programme, which will construct 3 million affordable homes throughout Brazil. Unlike most social housing programmes Minha Casa, Minha Vida is structured especially to promote home ownership. The programme achieves this by providing 30-year subsidised mortgages to those Brazilians earning between one and ten times the national minimum wage of £182 per month.
